We Have More in Common

Thanks to NASA for this picture

I sincerely hope that anybody reading this saw the pictures from the James Webb Space Telescope this week, I’ve put my favourite one right there and this week I want to talk about some of the thoughts and emotions that these photos brought out in me this week.

Firstly: how fucking cool is space? Last night I saw the new Thor film “Love and Thunder”, and as much as I enjoyed the spectacle of them traversing the universe, i don’t think humankind has ever created sci fi media that in any way compares to these JWS Telescope images this week. They’re stunning beautiful in a way that no human being with a CGI computer could even come up with.

And they’re real, space is so big! The fact that the above photo is multiple lightyears in length is just utterly blowing my mind, and almost makes any problem that I have in my personal life right now seem completely and utterly inconsequential.

In fact, it makes basically every disagreement that we mere humans have seem ridiculous and almost cute in comparison. It doesn’t really matter if you’re a democrat or a republican; you’re squabbling over how we should govern ourselves on this small planet which just happened to win the 1 in a trillion intergalactic lottery to be inhabitable by life while we continue to spin around on this little rock hurtling around space.

Don’t get me wrong, I know in this day and age we’re more polarized than ever and there’s some pretty fundamental things which people seem to disagree with, but I don’t care if you’re talking about abortion or gun rights, if you look at the data you see that the majority of people actually agree and even if they don’t fully agree, their opinions probably only differ by a small couple of weeks of a trimester or the details of some background checks.

We have more in common than that which divides us.

So the next time you see someone wearing a red Trump hat, instead of getting all angry inside and taking that anger out on somebody who doesn’t deserve it, go looks at these wicked pictures of space because if the Carina Nebula can exist and be that beautiful, then the least we can do is try our best to appreciate our lives on this place we call earth.
